MCC December Run Challenge Takeaways

For the past number of years I have done a run challenge with my group in December. This includes 25 days of straight running. We start the 25 days with a 5km time trial, daily there are outlined specific runs, then we end the challenge with another 5km time trial. It’s been over 5 years I’ve implemented this into the off-season for my team.

The key takeaways over the years has been:

  • Everyone goes through highs and lows of being able to complete all 25 days. This includes some pains and fatigue that initially spark some uncertainty, but end up being humps they grow through and come out stronger. Like all growing pains it doesn't come without a few uncertain sensations. The athletes learn they can continue on and then feel the measurable gains.

  • Doing something everyday for 25 days is a commitment. Realizing you can do that develops a new level of confidence and perspective on what you can handle.

  • Athletes come out more durable with less injury or risk of injury for the year after.

  • It moves the overall aerobic conditioning needle forward rather than backwards in the holiday season with low logistical stress. It sets a good foundation going into the new year and next training block.

  • Most athletes PR or match their best 5km run times on the second 5km TT. This helps them understand managing fatigue, effort and what is possible.

  • Everyone learns something about themselves and breaks through some views they had on themselves.

  • It helps manage the extra holiday cheers with some good healthy activity to keep body composition from getting overly derailed through December.

  • Athletes learn to manage effort and learn how to back up workouts effectively.

There are many more special little lessons learned through taking on this challenge. For some it might even take a few attempts to really nail completing it. The main thing is to open your mind to something and give it a try. See what you learn, what you can complete, and move your own personal needle forward.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Cheers,

MCC
